A night out in Reykjavík with Peter and Bjørn

A night out in Reykjavík with Peter and Bjørn

About a month ago, Bjørn and I had a visit from our dear friend Peter from Denmark. He stayed here for two weeks and we spend the first one experiencing Reykjávíks colourfull nightlife.

We started out at Café Rót, for a stoner-rock concert performed by some very young, but enthusiastic boys. Free entrance, as is the most common concept on most of the live concerts I’ve been to in Reykjávík.

After the concert was over, we sat down outside to get some fresh air. Katie, my American friend, spotted a cat under a car next to us and quickly decided that the only reasonable thing to do with it, was to put it on top of my head… Aaaaaw!?

As we moved on and made a turn around the next corner, the pavement had been covered with candles. Someone had made a shimmering protest-banner reading “SAVE TIBET”. It’s little things like this that surprises me every time i go downtown late at night.
Not 30 seconds passed before one of the guys involved came to us and cheerfully stated: “I will bet you 200 kroner, that I can hold a ball of fire in my hand without dropping it”. We simply had to see that, so Peter and I pulled out our coins.
A ball of paper was set on fire and he convincingly proved his point. We asked him how he did it, and told us that he had his hands covered in Vaseline. I asked if I could try it out and started playing catch.

Afterwords I tried getting my hands clean in a nearby pond, which took quite a while. We spend the rest of the night at a cafe with a view of the candles.

More stories from Peters visit soon.
